Lent Plans

Lent starts this week on Wednesday, and in the spirit of accountability, I’m going to post my plans for it here so that there’s more chance of me actually doing them!

Last year, I meant to go veggie for Lent. It didn’t work out because I ended up in hospital in Manchester, where I was for an SCM weekend! I also intended to reread Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love and blog about that, but it didn’t work out either (though for self discipline reasons rather than the decision that if I had ended up in hospital, doing things to my diet, even if temporary, probably wasn’t the best idea!)

My plan for this year involves doing Morning and Evening Prayer each day, and I have a useful app on my phone for that. I’m also hoping to attend a Lent course and write a weekly reflection on that – this depends on tiredness levels, of course. I know these things are what a lot of people do anyway, and not fasting from any food or drink might seem a bit unusual but it’s better for me, I think, and your own wellbeing needs to be prioritised.

In the past, I’ve given up alcohol or meat or chocolate, but I can’t really drink on the combination of meds I’m on, and restrictions on diet still feel like a bad idea. Lent is one of my top liturgical seasons (you can decide if I just like penitence or if it’s the purple!) – I apologise in advance if I get overly into it, particularly to non-Christian types! It means a lot to me though, and especially I think this year. It’s not going to be easy by any means, but life isn’t always easy and it’s good to remind myself of that. More on this will doubtless come up in my reflections!

Ash Wednesday being the same day as Valentines Day has meant that the Internet is even more full of strange and excellent things than usual! These are just two of the examples I’ve seen so far.

Wednesday being Ash Wednesday also means that tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as Pancake Day. We’ll be out in the evening but we might be able to have pancakes at lunch, so I’m looking forward to that. If we do have pancakes, photos will inevitably follow!
